Sympathy Etiquette
Q: What is the best style for a funeral arrangement? How
do I order a "special" design?
A: Highly personalized sympathy tributes depicting an aspect
of a person's life are very popular. If he loved the outdoors,
perhaps a funeral piece including branches and natural materials
would be best. If she was a gardener, maybe a tribute with a collection
of garden flowers would be best. The key to ordering a unique
design is to give the florist a few hints about the deceased or
about yourself.
Q: If the death notice mentions a charitable donation is
it still appropriate to send flowers?
A: Flowers help say what is often difficult to express.
This is why it is always appropriate and in good taste to send
an arrangement. It adds warmth to the service and provides the
emotional support so important to the family at this time.
Q: Is it appropriate to send flowers to the family's home?
A: Sending flowers to the home is a thoughtful way to express
your condolences. While some people choose to send flowers to
the home immediately, others prefer to wait a week or longer.
In the weeks after the service, sending flowers can be a comforting
gesture that you haven't forgotten.
Q: If several of us want to send flowers together, how
do we sign our names so that the family knows how to thank us?
A: There should room on the enclosure card for several
names; however, if there are more than a few, it is best to sign
the card as a group, such as "The Guys in Shipping" or "The Jones
Family". It is also wise to include a contact name and address
on the card so the family can properly thank you.
Q: Is it appropriate to send a plant to the funeral home?
If so, will they send it over to the family after the service?
A: Yes, it is appropriate to send a green or flowering
plant. Some funeral homes will deliver plants or flowers to the
home if specified. In some cases, the florist may make arrangements
to pick up the plant after the services and deliver it to the
family. Otherwise, the funeral director will simply notify the
family that they may take the plants with them after the service.
Check with your florist to see what is customary for your area.
Q: What is appropriate to send for a cremation?
A: A tastefully designed floral tribute adds beauty to
any type of memorial. Families usually have a piece made especially
for display next to the urn. Florists in many areas may have specific
suggestions for arrangements.

All About Sympathy Flowers
According to a study conducted by the Virginia Polytechnic Institute,
after family, friends, and eulogy, flowers rank first among those
who have lost a family member or friend as the most meaningful
aspect of funerals.
Furthermore, at a time of loss, recipients rank flowers and sympathy
cards as the most meaningful of gifts. Those surveyed believe
flowers and plants are a critical component of funerals, providing
a necessary diversion, something to talk about, and a bright environment
at a somber time.
Asked to identify gifts and memorials that helped a great deal
with grief, a majority of surveyed respondents named flowers and
plants. Respondents also agreed strongly that looking at the cards
to see who sent flowers is a comfort.
Flowers
show respect for the deceased, as well as loving support of family
and friends, especially when you cannot be there in person. Flowers
also make for a more pleasant atmosphere, helping those present
feel as comfortable and welcome as possible. With flowers at a
service, you help create a lasting and beautiful memory for those
who have gathered to mourn the loss of someone dear.
Even when a charity or other organization has been selected to
receive financial contributions in memory of the deceased, flowers
are considered by most to be an appropriate expression of additional
sympathy and support. Flowers can reflect many religious beliefs,
including eternal life and rebirth. Your floral consultant is
well aware of the differences between faiths and will assist you
in this regard.
There is a wide variety of floral tributes for every budget. Among
them: bud vases; table arrangements; standing arrangements; sprays;
casket drapes; wreaths; planters; and other designs which reflect
a more personal aspect of the deceased, such as favored flowers,
colors, and styles. Here, too, your professional florist can advise
you.
Among floral sympathy expressions, distinctive fresh flower designs
and garden basket planters are becoming increasingly popular as
they may be easily transported home after the funeral to serve
as a comfort to the family. Other popular and thoughtful gifts
are fruit and food baskets sent directly to the family at home.
Interfaith Etiquette for Funeral Flowers
Funeral traditions vary for each culture and faith. Here are some
general guidelines to help. If in in doubt, check with local religious
leaders or family members, too.
Baha'i
Burial should take place within a one-hour drive from the place
where death occurs. Flowers are appropriate.
Buddhist
Most Buddhist funerals take place in a funeral home -- not in
a temple. Sending flowers is normally considered appropriate.
Eastern Orthodox
During the period before burial (three days after death), flowers
may be sent to the funeral home. Those unable to attend the funeral
may send flowers to the funeral home or the family home.
Hindu
Hindus try to hold a service at a funeral home before the sun
goes down on the day of the death. Flowers generally may be sent,
although doing so isn't necessarily part of the Hindu tradition.
Islamic
Opinion varies as to the appropriateness of sending flowers. Some
say the Islamic emphasis on simplicity makes gifts of flowers
unsuitable. Others say sending flowers is appropriate. Seek the
opinion of a local religious leader or the family.
Jewish
Sending flowers to a funeral home or burial site is not normally
done. Increasingly, however, friends are choosing to send flowers
to bereaved family members at home following the funeral. Similarly,
it's becoming more common to see some floral decorations sent
to adorn the synagogue foyer. These new traditions, however, are
generally not practiced among Orthodox Jews.

Romantic
Tips for Valentine's Day
Tips for Men
Plan ahead. Make your dinner or weekend getaway reservations in
advance. Call your florist early as well.
Do your to do's. Make your romantic evening or weekend special
and do errands early to avoid being late.
Double the fun. Plan to go to a concert, ballgame or theater during
the week. Invite your Valentine to accompany you by sending flowers
with the tickets tucked in.
TV free. Make a pact with your partner to turn the TV off for
the entire day -- enjoy the silence and each other.
Set the mood. Send flowers to your Valentine's office early in
the week -- to get things started right.
Petal power. For a quick and easy way to create a romantic setting,
take rose petals and sprinkle them on your bed or in a bath and
add some soft lighting.
Countdown calendar. Build the anticipation with romantic gestures
all week long:
- Leave a romantic message or song on your Valentine's answering
machine
- Place a box of fragrant bath crystals on your loved one's pillow
- Tape a romantic quote or poem on the bathroom mirror for your
Valentine
- Tuck away a romantic gift -- wine, candles, CD -- for your loved
one to find
- Bring home flowers to set the mood for the weekend
Tips for Women: How to Turn Up the Heat
If your man is playing a little too cool, light a little romantic
fire on your own.
Order brochures from romantic getaway spots and casually leave
them where he's likely to see them.
Circle February 14th on the calendar in your kitchen (or call
your sweetheart's office and ask someone to circle the date in
his calendar). Team up with a girlfriend: Each of you can remind
the other's sweetheart to plan ahead for Valentine's Day.
A week before Valentine's Day, send your sweetheart a romantic
e-mail message, or change his computer screen saver to display
a romantic quote. Early in the week, draw a heart on the bathroom
mirror with bright red lipstick, or tie a red bow around the neck
of your cat or dog to signal that Valentine's Day is coming.
Give him flowers or a gift in the middle of the week with a note
saying how much you're looking forward to a romantic Valentine's
weekend.
Gift
Tips
There's nothing like the satisfaction of giving the perfect
gift. The Society of American Florists has developed this convenient
guide on how to give great gifts and when to give them.
How to Give the Perfect Gift
Prioritize special dates on your calendar. Stay on top of your
gifting needs by checking your calendar at the beginning of every
month. Better yet, solicit the help of your local florist. All
you have to do is tell your florist the important dates you would
like to be reminded of. He or she will contact you ahead of time
with gift suggestions for the upcoming occasion, and can even
make suggestions or remind you what kind of flowers you sent last
time. Take advantage of the reminder service offered on this Web
site. Click
here for our Reminder Service.
Take the time to find something that is perfectly suited to your
recipient's interests, personality and style. These tips can get
your thinking on the right track:
* Does he or she have a special hobby or interest? Add to an antique
lover's collection with a vintage vase filled with flowers (a
florist can create the perfect arrangement to complement the vase).
* Would he or she prefer a quiet and romantic celebration? Try
tickets-for-two to a special event. Send a dinner invitation delivered
to his or her door in a bouquet of flowers.
* Does he or she deserve some special pampering? Ask your florist
to help you create a special spa kit in a basket with goodies
like bath beads and oils on one side and a beautiful arrangement
of flowers on the other.
Remember Special Days All Year Round
There are many occasions throughout the year when gifts are traditionally
given and received, but don't forget those special days that celebrate
personal milestones.
Anniversaries, birthdays and holidays are special occasions, but
they're not the only times when giving a gift brightens the day.
Celebrating a long friendship or shared accomplishment can renew
and strengthen relationships with friends and family.
Don't let personal milestones go by uncelebrated. Be sure to note
upcoming events like graduation, new baby, new home, new job,
promotion or well-deserved retirement on your calendar. Be sure
to add new occasions as they occur. Personal milestones such as
a first recital, finishing an important work project, quitting
smoking, losing weight or passing the bar exam deserve a gift
of recognition. A personalized gift adds to the sense of accomplishment
and increases the enjoyment of a job well done.
